Improved pharmaceutical research and development with AIE-based nanostructures

Abstract

Drug screening, formulation optimization and pharmacological research have been regarded as pivotal phases in pharmaceutical research and development. However, during these phases, the lack of direct and thorough observation of interactions between drugs and biosystems can lead to high cost and low efficacy. Due to their superior fluorescence properties, potent biocompatibility and flexible controllability, AIE-based nanostructures are gradually being employed in drug discovery and research. Herein, we highlight the latest advances in the application of AIE-based nanostructures in pharmaceutical research and development. As prominent fluorescence agents for real-time and dynamic monitoring, AIE-based nanostructures can facilitate drug screening processes, provide detailed guidance for formulation optimization and assist in exploring pharmacological mechanisms. Moreover, we review different roles of AIE-based nanostructures in enhanced pharmaceutical treatment, such as chemoprevention, gene therapy, radiotherapy and photodynamic therapy.
