We show that BF4·4-chloroanilinium·18-crown-6 complex can serve as an efficient thermoresponsive initiator in cationic polymerization of epoxy showing a high apparent activation energy of 100 kJ mol−1. Remarkably the conversion at the gel point and consequently the structure of the networks does not significantly depend on the initiation temperature. This bodes well for applications of supramolecular initiation to control the polymerization of epoxy thermosets.
