Synthesis of atropisomeric phosphino-triazoles and their corresponding gold(I) complexes

The synthesis of atropisomeric phosphino-triazoles through a CuAAC approach is disclosed. Gold(I) chloride complexes of single-enantiomer phosphines were then prepared and again demonstrated to be conformationally stable.

A supramolecular NIR nanophotosensitizer for dual-modal imaging and ablation of tumors was constructed by loading disulfiram (DSF) into the vesicle from host–guest complex of lactose-capped pillar[5]arene (LacP5) with aza-BODIPY derivative (BSTA).

Asymmetric synthesis of 7-membered-ring-bridged 3,4-fused tricyclic indoles via Friedel–Crafts alkylation/annulation

Regio- and enantioselective Friedel–Crafts alkylation/N-hemiacetalization and dehydration sequence were reported using Ni(II)-PyBPI complex as catalyst, affording chiral 7-membered-ring-bridged 3,4-fused tricyclic indoles in good results.

Chemical fuel-driven gelation with dissipative assembly-induced emission

A dissipative self-assembly system based on G1 and G2 was fabricated by using dimethyl sulfate as chemical fuel. The mixed solution rapidly transformed into a hybrid hydrogel upon adding the fuel, accompanied by a significant emission enhancement.

Fluorometric detection of volatile amines using an indanonalkene platform

An “indanonalkene” fluorescent chemosensor captured volatile amines via an amine–thiol scrambling reaction, and was applied to prepare portable paper-based sensors and polymeric film sensors for point-of-care detection of amines.

An extended quinoid molecule based on bis(thiophene-diketopyrrolopyrrole) with balanced ambipolar semiconducting properties and strong near-infrared absorption

A NIR strong absorbing molecule was constructed by taking the structural advantages of a quinoid and diketopyrrolopyrrole, with an absorption maximum of up to 1039 nm and hole and electron mobilities up to 0.19 and 0.2 cm2 V−1 s−1, respectively.

Hypochlorous acid-activated two-photon fluorescent probe for evaluation of anticancer drug-induced cardiotoxicity and screening of antioxidant drugs

THPIC was developed to detect HClO in lysosomes. The results showed that HClO could be used as a biomarker for evaluating drug-induced cardiotoxicity, and THPIC could be applied as a platform for screening drugs to prevent cardiotoxicitys.

4,7-Diarylbenzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazoles as fluorophores and visible light organophotocatalysts

A library of 26 electron donor-acceptor organophotocatalysts based on the benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (BTZ) group has been developed. These visible light organophotocatalysts were then used in a Minisci-type alkylation of heteroarenes under both batch and continuous flow conditions.

About this collection

This themed collection, featured in Organic Chemistry Frontiers, is dedicated to the late Professor John S. Fossey, who passed away on Friday, April 15th, 2022.

Professor John S. Fossey had been heavily involved with Organic Chemistry Frontiers since its launch ten years ago. As a member of the Advisory Board, he witnessed the journal's growth and supported its numerous achievements. Professor Fossey's significant contribution to Organic Chemistry Frontiers, a collaboration between the UK and China, marked the culmination of his lifelong commitment to promoting catalysis and sensing research through international collaborations.

Guest Editors Tony D. James (Bath University), Steven D. Bull (Bath University), Shu-Li You (SIOC), and Xuhong Qian (ECUST & ECNU) extend their heartfelt appreciation for contributions made by Professor Fossey’s friends and colleagues to this collection.
