Determination of trace elements in mineral water by MIP OES using the Marin-5 nebulization system
Abstract
In this study, three analytical procedures for the determination of inorganic constituents in mineral water were performed. To increase sensitivity, the Marin-5 nebulization system was coupled to ICP OES and MIP OES for Al, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, and Pb determination in mineral water and, thus, meet the requirements of Brazilian legislation. The accuracy of MIP OES and ICP OES measurements was evaluated using the certified water reference material (NIST 1643e). Recovery rates obtained ranged from 83% to 117%. The use of the Marin-5 nebulization system provided an increase in sensitivity, leading to limits of detection that were up to 6 times lower for ICP OES and 3 times lower for MIP OES. In addition, it made it possible for both techniques to meet the maximum limits allowed by Brazilian legislation for Al, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, and Pb in mineral water. Most water samples had concentrations within limits established by Brazilian legislation for mineral water, except for Al and Pb, which in four samples exceeded the maximum allowed limits.
