Organic photodetectors: materials, device, and challenges

Abstract

Organic photodetectors (OPDs) have garnered significant attention owing to their easy processing, compatibility with flexible substrates, tunable absorption characteristics, cost-effective manufacturing, and lightweight nature. Currently, OPDs have made notable advancements in terms of materials and structures, positioning them on a par with traditional photodetectors (PDs) in certain aspects. They showcase promising applications in tandem devices. However, there is still ample room for further development. Herein, we present an overview of the operational parameters and the critical development possibilities in the materials used in OPDs and tandem structures, as well as the future potential applications of OPDs. We believe that this essay provides novel concepts to advance the development of high-performance OPDs and explore their practical applications.
