Recent progress on the materials and structure of supercapacitors for AC line filtering applications

Abstract

As electronics continue to rapidly evolve towards miniaturization and integration, traditional aluminum electrolytic capacitors (AECs), with their larger size and lower capacity, fail to meet the increasing demands of flexible electronic devices. In contrast, supercapacitors, known for their high specific capacitance, rapid charge/discharge rates, and extended lifespan, are emerging as viable replacements for AECs in next-generation filtering capacitors. However, the practical application of supercapacitors in AC circuit filtering is limited by their slow ion migration dynamics, which cannot simultaneously satisfy high-frequency response and high energy density. To overcome these obstacles, researchers are focusing on the development of high-performance filtering capacitors by selecting suitable electrode materials and adopting innovative structural designs. This study provides a comprehensive review of recent progress in supercapacitor electrode materials for AC line filtering and explores their future application prospects. By advancing the development of filtering supercapacitors, we can significantly enhance the integration and miniaturization of these components, offering new solutions for efficiently utilizing unstable energy sources.
