Tailoring supports for enhancing the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance of platinum species: a review

Abstract

Platinum (Pt)-based electrocatalysts have been identified as the most active materials for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) toward water electrolysis. To further enhance the utilization efficiency and activity of Pt species, significant efforts have been made to consciously modulate Pt-based electrocatalysts, resulting in promising improvements. Here, we review recent advances in utilizing supports to maximize the HER performance of Pt species. Specifically, we highlight the strategies for tailoring supports through doping, morphology, vacancy, heterostructure, and phase transition engineering. Furthermore, a perspective is proposed to emphasize the future challenges and opportunities for regulating supports, which can contribute to the advancement of extremely efficient and cost-effective electrocatalysts for hydrogen energy.
