Unrevealing the Potential of Multicomponent Metal Ion Incorporation and Sulfide Modification in Cobalt Oxide for Efficient Water Oxidation

Abstract

Cobalt oxide is one of the promising materials for oxygen evolution reactions (OER). Customizing the metal oxide by incorporation of metal ions and sulfide modifications are effective but challenging strategy for efficient OER. In the present work, we report the synthesis of CdCoO and CdCoS materials by incorporating Cd metal ions. The optimized electronic properties around the Co-active sites cause improved catalytic activities by showing a lower overpotential compared to various reported cobalt oxides(oxyhydrides). The CdCoS performs the superior OER activity with an overpotential of 199 mV at 10 mAcm-2. This work emphasizes the effect of metal ion corporation and sulfide modification on the OER activity of cobalt oxide for water splitting and provides a new multicomponent engineering strategy for designing efficient electrocatalysts
