Tunable amplified spontaneous emission based on liquid magnetically responsive photonic crystals

Abstract

Tunable amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) based on liquid magnetically responsive photonic crystals (MRPCs) is demonstrated. Rhodamine B (RhB) was used as a dye and liquid MRPCs were used as a tunable optical resonator constructed with monodispersed Fe3O4@PVP particles suspended in ethanol. By tuning the wavelength position of the photonic band gap (PBG) under different applied magnetic fields, tunable ASE was achieved. This result opens an avenue toward remotely tunable liquid lasing systems, which can find many practical applications in optical communication, sensors, and biooptics.
