Impact of Bi and its oxide phases on Bi2S3 compound transformation and photoelectrochemical performance†
Abstract
Bi2S3 films were synthesized by sulfurizing sputtered Bi and Bi2O3 (α, β phases). Metallic Bi enabled a more efficient conversion, while Bi2O3 impeded Bi2S3 formation due to its strong Bi–O bonds. Sulfur distribution along film depth significantly affected photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance, underscoring the critical importance of precursor selection for optimized functionality.
