Research progress of Co-based MOFs and their derivative materials for oxygen evolution reactions

Abstract

The energy consumption for hydrogen production through electrocatalytic decomposition is mainly constrained by the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process. Cobalt-based metal–organic framework (Co-based MOF) materials are a class of crystalline porous materials formed by the self-assembly of cobalt ions and organic ligands through coordination bonds. Due to their structural diversity and functional adjustability, they show great application potential in the OER field. This paper systematically reviews the research progress of Co-based MOF materials with different dimensional structures and their derivative materials for the OER. The main challenges faced by Co-based MOFs and their derivative materials in OER applications and solutions were deeply discussed. The existing problems were summarized, the future development directions were prospected, and feasible research ideas were proposed.
