Efficient electrochemical upgradation strategies for the biomass derivative furfural

Abstract

In the field of chemical industry, utilizing agricultural and forestry waste as carbon resources is a promising concept for producing high value-added products, while effectively maintaining the carbon balance of the ecosystem. The biomass derivative furfural, an abundant platform compound with a series of functional groups, can be converted into various chemicals and fuels. In recent years, the use of electrocatalytic technology to replace traditional harsh thermocatalysis has undoubtedly been an effective means of achieving green and sustainable development. Herein, we comprehensively review the research progress of electrochemical upgradation of furfural in recent years, including electrochemical oxidation/reduction reactions and paired electrosynthesis systems from the perspective of energy optimization, focusing on distinctive design concepts and new coupling reactions. By studying the interface between electrocatalysts and electrolytes, reaction pathways and mechanisms are elucidated, and design principles of electrocatalysts and electrochemical reactors are emphasized. These studies are conducive to exploring the evolution trend of organic compound electrocatalysis from furfural as well as other abundant and functional precursors. Finally, we emphasize present challenges and opportunities, and put forward reasonable suggestions and prospects for future development.
