Recent developments in calix[4]pyrrole (C4P)-based supramolecular functional systems

Abstract

The design and development of diverse functional systems in recent years have achieved a plethora of landmarks in the two cornerstones of supramolecular chemistry, i.e., molecular recognition and self-assembly. Among the various supramolecular entities, the non-aromatic macrocyclic skeleton calix[4]pyrrole (C4P) has been employed for a wide range of potential applications in ion/ion-pair or neutral molecule binding/sensing, polymers, catalysis, drug delivery, pharmacology, ion transport, molecular machines/switches, adsorption, etc. According to the literature, there are numerous reports on functionalized C4P-based architectures, demonstrating the various applications of C4P in diverse fields, which urgently need to be catalogued to provide a guide for researchers working in this wonderful field. Hence, herein, our aim is to compile all the recent advancements in C4P-based supramolecular systems. We believe that this updated version about the emerging C4P chemistry will be very useful to readers in the supramolecular community and will surely unveil the hidden prospects related to this simple but effective supramolecular receptor.
