The Development of Theranostics – Imaging Considerations and Targeted Drug Delivery

Theranostics is a rapidly developing field aiming to combine therapeutic and imaging agents within the same formulation, as a powerful tool in the development of personalized medicine. However, there is simply no one modality or carrier material that can answer all biomedical questions. Hence, specific questions require individual solutions in terms of choice of therapeutic agent, imaging modality and carrier material. Accordingly, the wide array of carrier materials applicable to theranostics is highlighted in this chapter. Moreover, the advantages and limitations of the applicable imaging modalities are presented. Notable research examples of theranostics are discussed to illustrate the vivid differences in approaches to various questions. These insights are intended to provide information on the advantages and limitations of theranostics and the considerations that should be taken into account in theranostic system design and application.
