Magnetic Targeting as a Vehicle for the Delivery of Nanomedicines
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are an attractive option for tissue repair, but scar tissue and loose bodies occur if we use a large number of cells to treat tissue injury. In 2008, Ochi developed a new cell delivery system using MSCs labeled with supraparamagnetic iron oxide and external magnetic force and succeed the effective accumulation of MSCs to the tissue injury site. This system was applied for cartilage, bone and muscle injury in animal models and better tissue regeneration was obtained than using MSCs injection only. Our new cell delivery system with m-MSCs and an external magnetic force has the potential to become a novel therapeutic option for tissue regeneration in the foreseeable future.
