CHAPTER 12

Science and Conservation at the Florentine O. P. D. and Raphael's Madonna of the Goldfinch

Because of its long history, the O. P. D. has long been part of the development of the relationship between the preservation of works of art and the sciences. Today, the O. P. D. continues the approach that has by now become traditional in which science has a precise role within a theoretical vision. The procedure developed for the routine activity of the O. P. D. labs is very important in that it provides an optimal analytical approach in order to maximize resources and obtain reliable results. All this is shown through some examples taken from the conservation activity and mainly from the conservation of the Raphael's Madonna of the Goldfinch, where many different techniques were applied.
