Boron-Containing BODIPY Chromophore for Fluorescent Sensing

Developing fluorescent probes for sensing of biologically and/or environmentally related analytes has emerged as a focal point in chemistry and biology. Numerous reports have identified that fluorescent probes can provide high sensitivity, high spatial resolution and technical simplicity. In this chapter, we cover the versatile applications of BODIPY dyes, and we summarize the synthetic approach to BODIPY derivatives with optimized properties, the photophysical principles employed in the rational design of probes, designed probes that have been exploited in the detection of various analytes including pH, metal ions, anions, biomolecules and labeling biomolecules.
