CHAPTER 1

Elementary Reactions: Rate Constants and their Temperature-Dependence

This chapter examines the factors which influence how the rate constants for elementary gas-phase reactions, both unimolecular and bimolecular, depend on temperature. This examination is largely conducted through the medium of microcanonical transition state theory which is described in some detail. The success of transition state methods in predicting and explaining the magnitude of rate constants, and how they depend on temperature, is examined for a variety of selected elementary reactions with some emphasis on reactions, such as those between free radicals, where there is no defined potential energy barrier on the minimum energy path leading from reactants to products.
