Molecular Biology for Medicinal Chemists

Molecular biology has had a tremendous impact on the process of drug discovery. To explore its significance, we begin by describing the origins of molecular biology through a historical perspective, outlining the major landmarks that shaped this field. This is then followed by a detailed examination of the impact of molecular biology on different aspects of the drug discovery pipeline. It can be argued that molecular biology has had the most transformative effect on the target identification and validation steps of the drug discovery process. The role of molecular biology in these steps is described through the contribution of recombinant DNA technology, model organisms as well as RNA interference. Lastly, we examine the impact of molecular biology techniques such as surface plasma resonance and X-ray crystallography on the later stages of hit identification and lead optimisation.
