Chapter 10

Properties of Electrospun Polymer Fibres

This chapter primarily evaluates the mechanical, thermal and surface properties of electrospun polymer fibres and makes reference to both existing and possible future applications. The drive to understand properties of electrospun polymer fibres is paramount in determining new applications, and justification is required when selecting polymer processing using electrospinning over other conventional processing techniques. Thus, the properties of electrospun polymer fibres must be distinct, relative to those of the bulk. A review of the literature reveals a number of deviations between the properties of electrospun polymers and their bulk equivalents, thus highlighting the unique polymer property modifications occurring when using electrospinning processes.
