Recent advances in quantum dot synthesis

Semiconductor nanoparticles exhibit exciting size-tunable optical, magnetic, chemical and electronic properties with practical applications in a wide spectrum of fields including catalysis, photonics, photovoltaics, electronics, biological imaging and data storage. Colloidal approaches provide quantum dots of excellent quality due to the control in their size, shape, structure and composition of the material, and hence can be directly used for the respective applications. A brief overview of the recent progress in the colloidal synthesis of II-VI, IV-VI, I-III-VI, I-II-IV-VI and other transition metal chalcogenide or pnictide containing semiconductor nanoparticles have been discussed and some of their key properties highlighted.
