Demercurization Processes in Different Sectors of Industry
The chapter provides several case studies of the demercurization of contaminated industrial sites. Special attention is given to methods of demercurization of chlor-alkali plants, methods of recycling spent fluorescent lamps and methods of reducing airborne mercury in contaminated work spaces. Deactivation and demercurization of a chlor-alkali plant in the city of Pavlograd in the Republic of Kazakhstan are reported. Recycling methods for spent fluorescent lamps by thermal, pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical and vibratory–pneumatic methods are outlined. Reactors, flowcharts and chemical solutions used to achieve mercury-free workplaces are presented. Finally, clean-up and restoration of mercury-contaminated workspaces by chemical methods is described. Supporting chemical equilibria are provided.
