Mercury Legislation in the United States
A comprehensive survey of the current mercury legislation in the United States is presented. Legislation dealing exclusively with mercury is covered. Mercury-specific legislation includes the Mercury Export Ban Act and the ‘Battery Act.’ Many broader legislative Acts also indirectly affecting mercury have been passed. Important legislation regulating mercury includes the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, CERCLA and SARA. These major directives cover toxic materials, including mercury, in the air, water and landfills. Major legislative initiatives have been promulgated by the US Environmental Protection Agency, Food and Drug Administration and Occupational Health and Safety Administration.
