Electrochemical Properties of Mercury
General aspects of liquid mercury as an electrode and its electrochemical properties are covered at an advanced level. Equations describing the kinetics of electrode reactions and cathodic and anodic polarization curves for mercury in various electrolytes are given. Voltamperometric diagrams for reduction of Hg2+ ions in different solutions are given. Cathodic polarographic waves of mercury(II) ions and anodic curves in different electrolytes are shown graphically. Rate constants, exchange currents and transfer coefficients during electrolytic reduction of mercury(I) and -(II) ions are tabulated.
