Purification of Mercury Using Chemical and Electrochemical Methods

An introduction to the methods of purification of mercury is given. Various methods of purifying mercury are explained and the advantages and disadvantages of each method are discussed. Oxidation of impurities, wet chemical treatment, exchange reactions, distillation and electrolysis are covered. Impurities removed include organic, mechanical, metallic and trace moisture. A detailed discussion of the removal of precious metals is given since they are more difficult than most impurities to remove. Purification is also dependent on the hydrodynamic condition of the mercury.
