CHAPTER 7

Water Vapour Sorption of Natural Fibres

This chapter explores the water vapour sorption properties of natural fibres and how this influences their mechanical properties. Despite having been studied intensively for over a century, water vapour sorption behaviour is far from being fully understood. This chapter explores some of the properties, but concentrates especially upon the sorption kinetics behaviour and sorption hysteresis. A link between sorption kinetics and hysteresis is suggested. Finally, the chapter discusses some possible strategies for limiting water vapour sorption.
