Plasmon-enhanced Solar Chemistry: Electrodynamics and Quantum Mechanics

An overview is presented to track recent progress in the theoretical modeling of plasmonic solar cells. These cells, which combine silver or gold nanostructures with more traditional photovoltaic components, are a rapidly emerging research topic for efficient solar light harvesting and charge carrier generation. The physical foundations, mathematical derivations and numerical practices of theoretical work in this field are introduced for the three most popular approaches for describing surface plasmon excitation, namely classical electrodynamics, quantum mechanics and their hybrid derivatives. For each theoretical approach, applications aimed at guiding the systematic design of plasmonic solar cells are discussed with specific examples.
