Chapter 6

Storytelling

Storytelling is central to human existence and this chapter considers characteristics of effective storytelling and their incorporation within chemistry teaching to support creative thinking in the teacher and the student. Stories can set the chemistry in a new context which helps students make new mental connections. Components of stories such as unexpected change, appropriate detail, character and promoting curiosity are explained and contextualised within chemistry teaching. The use of story stimuli such as paintings, fictional stories and our own stories are then discussed to illustrate how they can be applied in chemistry teaching and learning.
