Chapter 2

Creative Thinking

This chapter explores how the different aspects of creative thinking can be developed within the chemistry classroom. We describe some kinds of purposeful thought that contribute to creative thinking both by the teacher and the students including support for the core creative activity of thinking in chemistry. This chapter is not arguing for a restructuring of curricula to focus on creativity or scientific process but rather to illustrate how creative thinking can be incorporated in and support existing curricula. It will provide guidance and activities on how to embed creative thinking within teaching. We shall also discuss the characteristics of a creative teacher, how to develop a creative mind set and make it part of teacher identity.
