Potential Effects of Coffee Isoflavones and Lignans on Health

Isoflavones and lignans are minor polyphenols present in coffee that have not yet been investigated in depth from the perspective of their possible role in contributing positively to several health benefits related to regular and moderate coffee consumption. Information on coffee isoflavones and lignans (both compositional profile and content) are still fragmentary and incomplete, and this makes it difficult to invoke their presence in coffee to explain some specific health benefits possibly related to their biological activity. However, due to the fact that several positive health effects of isoflavones and lignans from major dietary sources have been reported, the confirmed presence of these polyphenols in coffee cannot be neglected. The present chapter is intended to offer an overview on this topic.
