Chapter 3

Other Programs to Support Chemical Synthesis Planning

LHASA was probably the program that became of widest interest during the early introduction of synthesis planning by computer, but over a dozen other knowledge-based programs are described in outline. Alongside these projects are some using different methods, based on theoretical chemistry or designed to discover rules automatically from reaction data. The reasons why interest waned in synthesis planning by computer are discussed.
