CHAPTER 14

Emerging Market of Household Batteries

Household batteries are becoming an important solution for improving the amount of solar photovoltaics (PV) electricity generation that is used on-site in dwellings rather than being exported to the grid. Meeting local electricity demand increases the value of PV electricity generation substantially across many geographies where electricity prices are high for consumers, but household batteries are not economically attractive yet. In this chapter, the author reviews household batteries, including various technologies as well as alternative applications for household batteries to increase their value. The concept of community energy storage is also presented as a solution to improve the economic attractiveness of battery storage embedded in consumption centres and provide technical benefits for the distribution network or area. Finally, some environmental and policy notes on the implementation of household batteries are also discussed, together with the implications for various stakeholders such as consumers, utility companies and policy makes.
