Self-Cleaning Materials

This chapter describes the self-cleaning properties of polyurethane (PU) and its nanocomposites (especially those of semiconductor nanomaterials) with a special focus on biobased materials. The basic concept, type, importance, and mechanism of self-cleaning materials, along with the concepts of super-hydrophobic, super-hydrophilic, super-oleophobic, and amphiphilic surfaces are also discussed. Methods to analyze self-cleaning properties and to produce self-cleaning surfaces are also described here. Various applications of such self-cleaning materials are highlighted and, at the end of the chapter, concluding remarks and future directions are presented.
