Shape Memory Materials

The chapter deals with different types of shape memory polyurethane (PU) and its nanocomposites, especially those derived from biobased raw materials. The useful and fascinating performance of shape memory PU has created significant interest in both industry and academia. Thus, vast literature has been reported in the field, making it an extremely difficult task to compile it together. The chapter describes the basic concepts, importance, classification, advantages, background, design requirements, etc. of such stimulus-responsive polymeric materials. The factors affecting the shape memory behavior of such smart materials are discussed critically. The testing methods and biological behavior of shape memory PU and it nanocomposites are also elaborated in this chapter. Various potential applications are also mentioned herein. At the end of the chapter, the conclusions and future directions on the topic are highlighted.
