Introduction to Chemically Derived Graphene

This book chapter gives a brief introduction to chemically derived graphene (CDG), covering its background, preparation methods, properties, and challenges. The differences and relation between graphite, graphite oxide, graphene oxide, graphene, and CDG are discussed in the background section. Various preparation methods are presented in terms of their procedures, and their respective advantages and disadvantages are discussed. Moreover, current state-of-the-art techniques for large-scale manufacturing of CDG are mentioned for a better understanding of the emerging graphene industry. The general properties (physical, chemical, thermal, electrical, electrochemical, and mechanical) of CDG are summarized and compared to those of perfect graphene. Finally, a series of challenges with respect to the technology, economics, and environment in the graphene industry are given to offer guidance for further development in the future.
