Sustainable Synthesis of Pharmaceuticals Using Alternative Techniques: Microwave, Sonochemistry and Mechanochemistry

The pharmaceutical industry embraced the philosophy and principles of green chemistry early on, resulting in a very active search for more sustainable drug synthesis processes. The improvement of sustainability was successfully achieved following diverse approaches, including the use of alternative reaction media and alternative technologies such as microwave, mechanochemistry, and ultrasound, especially when combined with new catalysts and catalytic systems. The measurement and quantification of the “improvement” of sustainability required the development of green chemistry metrics that are herein briefly described and applied to selected examples of the use of microwave, mechanochemistry and ultrasound for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals.
