Colours from Physical Effects

The mechanism described here relies on purely physical effects, including scattering, reflectance, refraction, diffraction and interference and hence the result is referred to as “structural coloration”, a phenomenon that has held an ongoing fascination for generations of scientists. The colours of the sky and rainbows and the non-pigmentary coloration of many creatures and in some plants all fall into this broad general category, producing some spectacular visual effects.
