Photosensitisers play a crucial role in the production of singlet oxygen for applications in the medical and chemical biological areas. Their use in photodynamic therapy for the treatment of cancer is the main topic, but also covered are uses in the photo-inactivation of microbes, viruses and parasites, and in the decontamination of blood. Photothermal agents used in the therapy of cancer are described.
