Chapter 22

Introduction

This Part deals with those phenomena involving photochemical reactions of molecules that absorb in the visible and/or near-infrared regions of the spectrum, then transferring the electromagnetic energy, often generated from a laser but also importantly from the sun, into another useful form of energy. The chemistry of the main classes of organic, organometallic and inorganic near IR absorbers is covered in detail and their applications in thermal energy conversion, the protection from IR radiation and in data storage are outlined.
