Incandescence is the emission of electromagnetic radiation (including visible light) from a hot body as a result of its elevated temperature. The major application is in traditional electrical light bulbs, where passage of electricity through a resistive conductor in a vacuum causes heating to such an extent that light is emitted from excited electronic states.
