Emission of light from a material caused by mechanical force applied externally is known generally as mechanoluminescence (ML). This chapter covers the various subcategories that fall within ML: triboluminescence, piezoluminescence and crystalloluminescence, as well as the substantial developments in understanding, design and access of new materials, and their applications.
