Part 2 covers phenomena that result in and then apply the emission of light, or “luminescence” in its most general sense. These demonstrate not only a wide range of already important technical effects and applications, but also underpin potentially emerging technologies. Compared with the previous edition of this book, this Part has been largely rewritten both to include new science and technology, and to increase the emphasis of applications of luminescent probes in the life sciences.
