Introduction

This chapter covers in individual sections all the main phenomena that involve a colour change, normally reversible, under the influence of an external stimulus. These are photochromism, thermochromism, ionochromism, electrochromism, gasochromism, solvatochromism, vapochromism and mechanochromism. There is also a section on colour changes due to aggregation and one covering a range of miscellaneous chromisms, some of which are of growing importance, such as chronochromism and hydrochromism.
