Perspectives for the Future

Mass spectrometry is continuously demonstrating advances in both technical aspects, such as new hardware and devices, as well as in increased application. Researchers are constantly developing new techniques that enable new areas of interdisciplinary research. The scientific study of increasingly complex systems with multifactorial evaluation is a future trend. Thus, in this chapter the use of mass spectrometry in developing fields ranging from single-cell analysis (in chemical biology) to the study of ecosystems (in synthetic ecology) are explored. Chemical biology aims to unite the power of chemistry with biology to achieve a deeper understanding of biological function and activity, and then apply this knowledge to the sciences of pharmacology and biotechnology, with the aim of improving the technical and analytical quality of these research areas.
