Teixobactin is a novel antibiotic that has been isolated from Eleftheria Terrae, a Gram-negative bacterium. It displays potent activity against Gram-positive bacteria, such as vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE) and methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), both of which have been designated as serious threats to public health. This antibacterial activity has also been proved in various animal models of infection. Its mechanism of action is novel and it exhibits an excellent resistance profile. The work described herewith details the successful analytical and synthetic chemistry work undertaken to delineate the absolute stereochemistry of teixobactin.
