Model Compounds for Nitric Oxide Reductase

The synthesis and reactivity of a functional model of bacterial haem/non-haem nitric oxide reductase (NOR) has led to the discovery of new mechanistic insights that would be difficult to obtain in the natural system. Biosynthetic models of NOR have been instrumental in understanding the role of the conserved glutamate residues in the protein. Using the synthetic functional model of NOR and the related enzyme cytochrome c oxidase (CcO), the fundamental differences (geometric and electronic) that led to the experimentally observed differences in their respective substrate selectivity were investigated. This chapter compiles the state of the art in this area to provide a contemporary overview of the topic with an emphasis on the role played by synthetic modelling in demystifying the “yin–yang” relationship that exists between CcO and NOR as far as their substrates are concerned.
