Determination of Radioactivity Levels and 222Rn Exhalation Rates in Soil Around Ipen Facilities
The aim of this study is to evaluate radionuclides content, 222Rn exhalation rates, radium equivalent activity and hazard indices in soil samples around Instituto de Pesquisas Energéticas e Nucleares (IPEN) facilities. The activity concentrations in soil were measured by gamma spectrometry, using an HPGe detector. The radon exhalation rate in soil was determined using a model proposed by UNSCEAR1, taking into account the 226Ra concentration, the decay constant of 222Rn, the emanation fraction, the soil density, total porosity and diffusion length. The radium equivalent activity, external and internal hazard indices were determined using theoretical models.
