The primary purpose of this Silver Book is to be a guide towards a structured and uniform way of reporting on examinations from clinical laboratories, but it also provides the means to interpret older terms of properties and recalculate values expressed in older units. This chapter describes the evolution of commonplace terms and discusses some points still under debate.
