The Sulfite Oxidase Family of Molybdenum Enzymes

The sulfite oxidase enzyme superfamily is a large enzyme family of molybdenum-containing enzymes dominated by bacterial systems. Most of the characterized representatives of this enzyme family convert S- or N-containing substrates, and at least one of the four established major subgroups within the SO enzyme family actually contains enzymes catalyzing a reductive rather than an oxidative reaction. Here we summarize current knowledge of the phylogeny, enzymatic reactions, cellular functions and types of enzymes contained in this major family of molybdenum-containing enzymes.
