CHAPTER 1

Dust-Related Chemistry in Space

This introductory chapter defines the topics of interest for the book to be the chemistry of interstellar dust and the chemistry initiated by interstellar dust. The chemistry of interstellar dust is determined by various formation processes in stars, modified by the chemical and physical evolution of dust during its lifetime in interstellar space. The chemistry initiated by dust includes the surface chemistry of adsorbed atoms and molecules on dust grains, and also the chemical processing of ices that accumulate on dust surfaces in denser regions of interstellar space. The chapter gives a brief history of interstellar dust, the growing recognition and acceptance of its existence, and the gradual appreciation of its truly fundamental roles in modern astronomy.
